MSMS HOSTS 2016 SCIENCE CARNIVAL

On Tuesday, October 16, 2016 more than 1,000 second and third graders descended upon the Mississippi School for Mathematics and Science for the 22nd annual Science Carnival.

During the Carnival, MSMS students performed demonstrations in physics, biology, and chemistry to the delight of the elementary aged students.

“MSMS has a mission to expand their impact on the community,” said MSMS physics instructor Dr. Charles Vaughan. “Part of that his helping other teachers get ideas they can incorporate in the classroom.”

Each of the demonstrations are performed by current MSMS students. The students say, sharing their love of science with a younger generation is just one of the many things that makes MSMS so special.

“We get to show them what we’ve learned. We get to show them how fun science can be,” said MSMS student Maggie Rennie.

For the first time, MSMS partnered with Mississippi State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine. The MSU veterinarians and vet students set up their own stations that allowed the second and third graders to evaluate animal x-rays and interact with the vets’ own pets.

“We are here because we are interested in building relationships,” said Dr. Cooper Brookshire of the MSU College of Veterinary Medicine. “We want to mentor our students, our students mentor MSMS students, and the MSMS students mentor these kids from across our region.”
